one of the UK’s earliest online success stories is an adaptation of the original TED media, entertainment and event directories established in 1979, presented online since 1995 packed full of performers, entertainers, musicians, event services and media suppliers. The Entertainment Directory originally created by; Cole Stevens as a personal collection of the performance artists, actors, directors and crew he’d met throughout his career.

A respected head of year at St Marks school in north London, Paul Sutton realised the potential in Cole’s collection of contacts and assisted him with collating, researching and listing each entry within a hand written A5 address book. By 1986 the book became to large to be considered handy and two publications were drafted; Big TED with each contact name, business, postal address, phone, fax and telex categorised by type, while Little TED simply listed each business or performer alphabetically with phone and fax.

Although a niche market product, both books quickly became popular throughout the UK and were known as the media and event professionals best kept secret.

The media section contained a list of agents, casting directors, film, TV and stage hands which was used back in the 1980’s by many not so famous actors and TV presenters to source personal representation.

In 1991 TED attracted the attention from a publicist of a well known hoteliers guide who struck a deal to acquire the database, it is believed that the same data was then sold and distributed across other, now well known, venue finding, television production and event organising publications.

Cole Stevens continued to operate an event management company, entertainment agency of the same name and used his data to further develop his original concept online. Initial trials began in 1995 with over 4500 mobile djs and Clock, a newly formed design and media agency based in Watford, Hertfordshire helped to research, develop and introduce the use of text messaging.

Research showed that no similar website existed anywhere and no event or entertainment related business was using SMS technology to contact acts in this way, MobileDJ was completely unique, and this exciting enterprise quickly grew. Following successful trials of customer to DJ connections, TED, The Entertainment Directory in it’s original format was now available as an online resource and with the addition of location and SMS technology the directory had almost super powers! superTED was launched to become one of the UK’s earliest online success stories.

The TED business model has since been copied many times but superTED remains unique with it’s short notice solution for bookers, event managers and businesses, enabling customers to instantly connect with local entertainers, performers and event services. Venue managers who required an event service no longer had to chase, call or search through the yellow pages, but only to complete a short and simple form to notify all matching local services immediately via text message and to receive replies in minutes. The instant text message system also proved beneficial for UK entertainment agencies to check availability of their own and other acts.

Since acquiring superTED in January 2014 chimply have set out to improve the website’s design, making changes to over 700,000 pages, improving general navigation, mobile device display, improved search engine optimisation and introducing more modern functionality throughout.

Today, superTED is designed not only to make it easy for you to find the right supplier, venue or performer but to help those within the industry to succeed by promoting their profile online; displaying images, videos, description and using SEO to link back to their own website. The main search offers each and every single member free locally matched instant enquiries, the extremely popular ‘Bookings Board’ offers UK wide job opportunities and each profile allows direct contact via email or text message.

Besides offering free access to this fantastic event industry resource that covers media, music, venues, structures and live entertainment, superTED offers; ‘Jobs & Auditions’, ‘Book Now’ as pre-packaged services and fixed fee performances, a guide to ‘What’s On’, events and gigs posted by members and a list of guest bloggers offering advice, stories, tips and tricks from many experienced event professionals.
